Do Olivine Crystallization Temperatures Faithfully Record Mantle Temperature Variability?

چکیده

Crystallization temperatures of primitive olivine crystals have been widely used as both a proxy for, or an intermediate step in calculating, mantle temperatures. The olivine-spinel aluminum-exchange thermometer has applied to samples from mid-ocean ridges and large igneous provinces, yielding considerable variability crystallization We supplement the existing data with new temperature estimates for Hawaii, between 1282 ± 21 1375 19°C. Magmatic may be linked if thermal changes during melting can quantified. magnitude this change depends on melt fraction, itself controlled by temperature, composition lithosphere thickness. Both thickness vary spatially temporally, systematic differences ridges, ocean islands provinces. For provide robust evidence variability, controls lithology must isolated. develop multi-lithology model predicting magmas intra-plate volcanic provinces ridges. find that high seen at plume localities do require In absence further constraints productivity, we cannot robustly infer variable ocean-islands alone; example, extremely obtained Tortugal Phanerozoic komatiite could derive comparable modern-day Hawaii. This work demonstrates limit petrological thermometers when other geodynamic parameters are poorly known.

The temperature of the Icelandic mantle from olivine-spinel aluminum exchange thermometry

New crystallization temperatures for four eruptions from the Northern Volcanic Zone of Iceland are determined using olivine-spinel aluminum exchange thermometry. Differences in the olivine crystallization temperatures between these eruptions are consistent with variable extents of cooling during fractional crystallization. However, the crystallization temperatures for Iceland are systematically...

Olivine Hydration in the Deep Upper Mantle: Effects of Temperature and Silica Activity

Although water controls the biology and geology of the surface, hydrogen is perhaps the most poorly constrained compositional variable in the bulk Earth. Its concentration in the upper mantle appears to be controlled by its solubility as hydroxyl in the nominally anhydrous silicate phases, olivine, pyroxene, garnet, wadsleyite, and ringwoodite. Here we describe a series of experiments showing t...

CE:NTURY-SCALE SOLAFl VARIABILITY AND THE INSTRUMENTAL TEMPERATURE RECORD

Variability of the total solar irradiance (TSI) is a potential contributor to changes in global mean temperature on time scales longer than the relaxation time of the upper ocean (i.e. a few years). Indeed, striking correlations between the global instrumental temperature record, extending back a little more than a century, and observable solar features, most notably the solar cycle length, hav...

Reversible Record Breaking and Variability: Temperature Distributions across the Globe

Based on counts of record highs and lows, and employing reversibility in time, an approach to examining natural variability is proposed. The focus is on intrinsic variability; that is, variance separated from the trend in the mean. A variability index a is suggested and studied for an ensemble of monthly temperature time series around the globe. Deviation of hai (mean a) from zero, for an ensem...

The solubility of TiO in olivine: implications for the mantle

One characteristic of many subduction zone garnet peridotites is that they contain titanium-bearing phases not otherwise Ž . found in mantle rocks. In particular, titanoclinohumite TiCH andror its breakdown assemblage consisting of symplectic intergrowths of olivine and ilmenite is common in many of these bodies. The Alpe Arami garnet lherzolite of the Lepontine Alps, while lacking TiCH, displa...
